Jim Parsons, who played Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory, confirmed that he does not wish to return for a potential season 13 of the show. In an interview, Parsons said he feels the series ended at the right time after 12 seasons and 279 episodes. While he's grateful for the experience and opportunities the show provided, he believes it ran its course naturally without needing to continue further.
The Big Bang Theory aired its final episode in May 2019. The show was centered on a group of scientists and their friends living in Pasadena, California. It starred Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik.
Parsons thinks the show accomplished all it needed to in 12 seasons. The characters were given fitting sendoffs, with their storylines wrapped up and relationships in a good place. While fans were sad to say goodbye, the final season served as a proper conclusion without major cliffhangers necessitating another season. The show went out on a high note, its legacy intact.
Another season risked feeling repetitive or aimless, unable to recapture the same humor and heart after so many years. The actors were ready to pursue new opportunities, growing beyond roles they had played for over a decade. Ending when they did allowed them to go out with viewers still wanting more, rather than overstaying their welcome.
"It was the first time in my life of doing this show that it occurred to me that I might want to not do another contract after [season] 12 was up. I don't know if it's because I'm an Aries or just because maybe I'm in touch with myself. Whatever it is, once I had that thought, I was like, 'Well, that's your answer.'"
"There was no factor; there was no situation that I was like, 'Well, I've had enough of that.' No. There was nothing like that. It was just…when you know, you know. And you're susceptible and thrown around by the whims of your own existence and getting to a certain age and your life changes and suddenly you just think different. It has been fascinating to think about who I was 12 years ago. And sometimes when I have trouble learning a line or saying a line of Sheldon's right now, it's hard to know why specifically. But it's like, you're not the same person you were. There is a possibility that this actually became more difficult for you in a way. And I don't know what that means but it's like you just change."
Parsons believes the show will endure in reruns and streaming as a glimpse into the lives of characters audiences came to know and love. Though temporary, the time spent with them each week meant a great deal to fans and shaped culture. The show demonstrated intelligence, empathy and the power of friendship against stereotypes about geeks and scientists.
While Parsons understands fans wishing for more adventures with Sheldon and the gang, he thinks another season may have diminished rather than enhanced the show's legacy. What it left behind stands as an unparalleled sitcom phenomenon, its place in TV history secure. The series accomplished far more than anyone imagined, exceeding all expectations for its success and longevity.
