The cast of "The Big Bang Theory" was close-knit during the show's 12-season run and remained friends after filming wrapped. Though Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki portrayed beloved characters, their bonds extended off-screen.
Cuoco and Galecki dated for two years before ending their relationship in 2009, just as their characters Penny and Leonard were becoming romantically involved. “There were a lot of bed scenes. We were trying to end the relationship and it kept falling back in,” Cuoco said. However, the exes navigated the situation professionally. “We weren’t weird, which is what was weird,” Cuoco said. “It was a mutual breakup, and you can rarely say that. Johnny and I were friends first, then obviously we dated.”
Parsons and Mayim Bialik, who played couple Sheldon and Amy, connected over their no-nonsense approaches. "Jim and I had a lot of nice moments together on set and I think one of the things that worked so well for us as actor partners, and maybe as producing partners too, is that we’re not overly sentimental as humans,” Bialik said.
Ending the iconic show after 12 years was a hard decision. According to Cuoco, Parsons was the first to realize he couldn’t continue. “Jim said, ‘I don’t think I can continue on,’” Cuoco recalled. “And I was so shocked that I was literally like, ‘Continue on with what?’ Like, I didn’t even know what he was talking about.”
Creator Chuck Lorre supported the cast's choice to conclude "The Big Bang Theory" together. “I looked at Chuck: ‘Wow. I thought we were — I’m so blown away right now,’” Cuoco said.
Though the show has wrapped, its stars keep busy with new projects while remaining close. “We got over it really fast, and we’re closer than ever now,” Cuoco said of her breakup with Galecki. The cast chose to end on a high note after 12 memorable seasons of "The Big Bang Theory."
As Parsons noted, "There is no doubt that this amazing, yet hard-to-say-goodbye-to part of my life and career is now officially behind me. And while there is certainly a part of me that is sad to say that, there is another part of me that says it with a kind of relief that a good long run of something should come with." Thanks to the show's enduring humor and appeal, "The Big Bang Theory"'s legacy lives on.
