Jim Parsons departed from his funnyman persona on Sunday as he filmed a dramatic fight scene in New York City.
The 40-year-old star of The Big Bang Theory portrays a gay-rights activist in the upcoming HBO movie The Normal Heart.
The film takes place during the beginning of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City in the early 1980s.

Jim portrays gay activist Tommy Boatwright, a role that he also portrayed in the 2011 Broadway revival of the Larry Kramer play.
He shot a scene where his character becomes confronted by homophobic protesters holding signs as he tries to enter a building.
Jim's character ends up punching one of the protesters in the face.

The Tony-winning play has been adapted for the movie being directed by Glee creator Ryan Murphy.
