Julia Roberts had several box office hits throughout her career. However, on the flip side, she also missed out on significant roles. In one instance, she passed on The Blind Side, which got Sandra Bullock an Oscar. Roberts would opt for a popcorn flick instead, Valentine's Day, which proved to be the wrong decision.
Susan Sarandon has also had struggles, including how difficult some roles were to shoot, including The Rocky Horror Picture Show. She also faced some heat for apparent 'feuds' behind the scenes.
In the following, we'll take a look at what went on between Sarandon and Roberts behind the scenes of Stepmom.
Though as we'll see, it wasn't the first time Sarandon was implicated in this type of drama.
We've seen this time and time again in Hollywood, co-stars not getting along on-set. At times, things got so bad, that production halted completely. This is still taking place today, as Bill Murray's Being Mortal film had to stop its production, given misconduct allegations coming out against the actor.
Now on the flip side, it should be noted that not all allegations are always true.
In fact, Sarandon has faced multiple rumors of not getting along with a co-star throughout her career. One of those alleged feuds, was said to have taken place with Feud co-star, Jessica Lange. On Twitter, Sarandon finally shut the rumor down, tweeting out, "The #1 question I get in interviews is whether Jessica & I get along. Jess & I not only got along great during filming, we're now dating."
She continued, "I mean, staying in touch. She's one of the reasons I agreed to do the series. Working with brilliant actors only makes you better."
As it turns out, speculation would persist regarding Susan's conduct on-set.
Just because they're on your team, doesn't mean they're looking out for your best interest. That is especially true for those in Hollywood.
Take Dwayne Johnson as an example, his team told him to completely change his look and basically avoid speaking about everything he stood for... It sunk DJ's career to the ground but once he finally started doing things his way, everything changed for the better.
Now we're not suggesting Sarandon fire her entire team, but it was frustrating for her, as a PR person was trying to stir things up.
Susan finally completely denied the rumors of a feud with Roberts, claiming it was all made up.
"Press printed that Julia & I hated each other during Stepmom. Found out it was my PR person creating rumors."
She further stated, "If you make a movie with a male star everyone assumes you're ********. If it's a female star, everyone assumes you're fighting."
Julia Roberts decided to have some fun of her own with the statement, stating, "Actually, Susan and I were kinda hoping that people would say we were ********.
Now that's delicious cockatil-party fodder. But this? Boring."It all turned out to be okay for the duo and the film did pretty well at the box office.
Off a budget of $50 million, the 1998 film Stepmom was able to turn quite the profit, bringing in $159 million. Reviews for the film were mixed, IMDb rated the drama/romance a 6.8 stars out of 10, while Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 46% approval rating.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Esquire had a completely different outlook, calling the film a Christmas horror movie.
"I thought I had cried at Stepmom because it was about two women sharing the gift and burden of motherhood. In reality, I believe that the real reason was a subconscious fear that life is riddled with people who distort your beliefs and mold them to fit their own agenda," Esquire writes.
Ultimately, it seems as though the film might be remembered more so for the 'tension' behind the scenes than the movie itself.
