Former The Big Bang Theory star Melissa Rauch explains why she is against reviving the beloved sitcom. The actor joined the nerd-centric show as a mainstay in season 4 and stayed until it wrapped up its run in 2019. Now, she stars in NBC's new Night Court, which gives her an idea of what it takes to revive a hit series.
Speaking with Looper, Rauch explains why she is against a revival of The Big Bang Theory despite having first-hand experience that such treatments could work considering the early success of Night Court. The actor cites the way the CBS sitcom ended as her primary reason. Read her full quote below:
But at this moment, I'd be like, 'Ah, no, [The Big Bang Theory] ended so perfectly.' I would never want to tamper with that. [...]
I could see [a reunion special] happening. A revival right now — I'd be like, 'Nah, I don't think so.' But 30 years from now, if someone came knocking on my door the way I did to John — never say never.
The cancellation of The Big Bang Theory was unexpected, considering how popular that series still was. However, it boiled down to Jim Parsons' decision to leave the show, and others were convinced it would be difficult to continue without Sheldon.
Admittedly, The Big Bang Theory's final season had uneven storytelling. It dwelled way too much on Sheldon and Amy's Nobel Prize bid, and practically ignored the rest of the cast. However, CBS was still able to deliver an emotionally satisfying The Big Bang Theory finale. Sheldon reached his lifelong dream, while Penny and Leonard revealed they were expecting their first child. Amid all these changes, it wasn't really the end of an era: The Pasadena gang simply returned to their old ways, eating the same way in Apartment 4A, leaving a sense that the friendship will continue moving forward.
Further driving nostalgia was Young Sheldon's heartwarming tribute to The Big Bang Theory, showing the boy genius realizing that he has no friends. The prequel then showed all the young versions of the Pasadena gang scattered all over the world, clueless that they would all be together in a few decades. It was a great way to honor the nerd-centric sitcom. No wonder Rauch isn't keen on allowing a revival to happen.
