Although Friends had six main characters, each season ended up focusing more on one or two characters while the stories of the rest were left in the background, and only one season of Friends did justice to all its main characters. Although almost two decades have passed since Friends came to an end, it continues to be regarded as one of the greatest TV shows of all time, and its arrival in the world of streaming has brought the series to younger generations who are now discovering (and dissecting) the stories of Monica, Chandler, Joey, Phoebe, Rachel, and Ross.
Friends took the audience to New York City to follow the above-mentioned group of six close friends as they struggled to balance their social, personal, and professional lives while also dealing with the complications of adulthood, but even though they were all the main characters of the series, Friends spent a lot of its time focusing on the roller-coaster romance of Ross and Rachel.
Friends spent 10 seasons telling the stories of its main characters, but the spotlight wasn't shared equally, and each season focused more on one or two characters, with the tenth and final season being the only one that focused on all of them.
Friends season 1, for example, focused more on Rachel, who joins the group in the first episode after running away from her wedding, and so this season spends a lot of time with Rachel as she adapts to a new friend group, apartment, and lifestyle, as for the first time in her life, she will have to find a job. Season 1 also saw the beginning of the Ross and Rachel relationship, and so season 2 focused on Ross as their relationship began. Friends season 3 was all about Ross and Rachel, and it's the season that saw the infamous break. In season 4, Friends gave viewers and break and instead turned its attention to Phoebe, as she decided to be the surrogate for her brother's babies.
Friends season 10 could have easily continued the series' pattern of giving the spotlight to Ross and Rachel, more so as Rachel was about to move to Paris, but Friends broke this annoying pattern, while Chandler and Monica prepared to move to a new home with their twins, Phoebe married Mike, and Joey… continued being Joey. Surely, Ross and Rachel had the most memorable scene from the final season and episode of Friends when Rachel got off the plane to get back with Ross and have a family with him, but the rest of the group also had their chance to shine and were given proper endings – except for Joey, whose story continued in the spinoff series Joey.
