Gwyneth Paltrow is a lot of things. She's a businesswoman, an Oscar winner, and a global Marvel star. Most Hollywood fans know that she comes from a family of industry professionals. Her father, Bruce Paltrow, produced and directed multiple well-known projects, while her mother, Blythe Danner, was an actress.
As such, she isn't exactly self-made. Also, most people certainly won't consider her poor or even anywhere near that level. After all, as per Celebrity Net Worth she is worth $200 million. In 2019, her brand, Goop, was estimated at a whopping $250 million. But Paltrow says the opposite.
In an interview with The Guardian, Gwyneth Paltrow was asked why she did advertisements when she's a successful Oscar-winning film star. The actress replied that it was because she wasn't making money from acting since 2002. She said:
"I'll tell you why I basically stopped making money from acting in 2002. All the things I've done since then have been things I've really wanted to do, and I have not made money from them."

She explained that the advertisements pay for her lifestyle and allow her to choose which films she wants to do. But the interviewer was relentless and inquired about the money from the work she did in her 20s. The Shakespeare in Love star answered:
"Good question. I spent it on shoes. No. Well, I had saved money, but I bought a house, and I never made Julia Roberts kind of money. I made really great money, but not the kind of money …"

The interviewer then asked Paltrow what has been her highest payday for a role. But the actress didn't give out that information. Here's what the site wrote about that curious interaction: "She (Gwyneth Paltrow) won't tell me the most she's ever been paid for a role. I say I read somewhere it was $2m. She looks mildly perturbed. Is that offensively low? 'No, not at all,' she says vaguely. "That's what you read? Well, it's more than that." To add to this, the Iron Man star is also supposedly a self-made woman.
In an interview with Glamour, Gwyneth Paltrow expressed that most people know a false fact about her. They think that she's rich. But the star actually had to work hard to establish herself as an actress and as per her, Bruce Paltrow, her director and producer father refused to help her. Paltrow said:
"People think, 'She's just a rich kid,' Until I was 18, I was. Then I was broke. I've never taken a dime off my parents. I'm completely self-made… I went to UC Santa Barbara, and when I quit to try to be an actress, my dad was like, 'That's great, but I'm not gonna help you."

The Avengers: Endgame actress first thought her father was joking. But she quickly realized that he was dead serious and wasn't planning on budging from his plans. Paltrow elaborated and said, "I was like, 'Yeah, right.' And he was like, 'No, I'm not.' So I got an apartment with a roommate; I worked as a hostess at a restaurant; I would scrounge quarters to buy Starbucks—and walk there to save gas."
The Proof actress further said that all her dad did was offer her dinner when she was in a dire situation and nothing more. She said, "I remember once asking my dad for money, like, 'Please, I'm really stuck. Can you help?' And he said, 'You're more than welcome to come over for dinner.' That was it." The actress has certainly done well for herself since then and lives a rich life now.
