New details about the much-anticipated Young Sheldon season 6 finale reveal that the prequel is unnecessarily ruining The Big Bang Theory canon. As TV's number one comedy approaches the end of its year, certain ongoing plotlines are starting to culminate. Many of these narratives are expected to be paid off in the nearing season finale, which will be a special one-hour outing. While there are still a couple of episodes left before Young Sheldon season 6 ends, official plot synopses for the two-episode finale have been released, and they aren't good in terms of preserving The Big Bang Theory's continuity.
The Coopers have gone through a lot in Young Sheldon season 6, with each member having their personal arcs. Georgie is now a fully grown man with a newborn after Mandy gave birth to Baby Cece. Missy comes to terms with her place in the clan, while Sheldon begins to think about what's next for him after Texas. Finally, George and Mary are forced to re-examine the status of their marriage following their attraction to other people. The Young Sheldon season 6 finale, however, throws a curveball in the show's storytelling as it introduces an entirely new plot.
New details for the Young Sheldon season 6 finale, "A Romantic Getaway and a Germanic Meat-Based Diet" and "A Tornado, a 10-Hour Flight and a Darn Fine Ring" reveal that the send-off will see Sheldon leaving Texas for Germany. The socially-inept genius' stint abroad was previously revealed in The Big Bang Theory, but CBS is significantly deviating from the established canon about the specifics of the trip. For starters, Sheldon's move supposedly happened when he was 15 years old, but he's just 13 in Young Sheldon season 6.
Young Sheldon is infamously known for its lax regard for The Big Bang Theory continuity. Aside from contradicting details that were previously established in the nerd-centric sitcom, it has also created a couple of timeline snafus in the past. Despite that, none of them are as consequential as this one. The character's impending move to Germany means that Young Sheldon is fully skipping Sheldon's heartbreaking story about catching George having an affair with another woman — an incident that had a massive impact on the boy genius' life.
Essentially, CBS is fast-tracking Young Sheldon's storytelling and skipping about a year of Sheldon's life based on established canon, and it's unclear why. There is no need to do this at this point in its narrative. Although the series is inching near certain dark points in the Coopers' history, such as George's cheating scandal and his subsequent death, CBS could have just stretched out current storylines to delay both incidents if the show isn't ready to tackle them. Now, not only does this break The Big Bang Theory's canon unnecessarily, but it also muddies the project's future beyond Young Sheldon season 6.
Young Sheldon season 6 airs Thursdays on CBS.
