New details surrounding the Young Sheldon season 6 finale essentially confirm that The Big Bang Theory prequel is skipping George's cheating scandal. Despite not being able to physically appear in the nerd-centric sitcom, the Cooper patriarch was already a well-established character before Lance Barber debuted him in Young Sheldon. Thanks to Sheldon's penchant for sharing childhood anecdotes and Mary's consistent complaining about her supposed desolate marriage, The Big Bang Theory painted George as a bad family man who just drank and lazily lounged around the house. Throughout its run, however, Young Sheldon has continues to debunk this claim.
Sheldon's snipes about his dad being stupid, drunk, and negligent are nothing compared to his revelation about him in The Big Bang Theory season 10. While telling Penny the origins of his knocking habit, the boy genius revealed that he caught his dad in bed with another woman when he was 13 years old during spring break. Since then, there has been eager anticipation on how Young Sheldon will tackle the incident. The prequel has been laying the groundwork for George's cheating tendencies for years now. However, new details about the Young Sheldon season 6 finale all but confirm that the family comedy will ultimately be skipping it.
Based on the official synopsis for the two-part Young Sheldon season 6 finale, CBS is fast-tracking the show's storytelling. The send-off will see Sheldon leave Texas for Germany. However, while this has been established in The Big Bang Theory, the trip isn't meant to happen until he's 15 years old. Currently, he is just 13 in the prequel — the same age when he caught his dad cheating, per The Big Bang Theory.
Prior to the release of the aforementioned plot information, it was revealed that George's cheating scandal wouldn't happen in Young Sheldon season 6. Paige's timeline set-up, which was subsequently backed up by Sheldon's confirmation that he is on spring break, gave hope that the incident would take place before the year ends. This, however, kills all possibilities that it may still happen sometime in the next few weeks.
Since the show is guaranteed at least one more year, Young Sheldon is still able to tackle George's cheating scandal in season 7. Before the season 6 finale synopses were released, this was the general assumption. It made sense to push it back as far as CBS can since it will drastically change the dynamic of the Coopers. With news of Sheldon's departure from Texas, however, it would now be tricky to address the incident in Young Sheldon season 7 for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, it will only make Young Sheldon's timeline issues worse. Per the CBS flagship show, George's affair happened long before Sheldon's trip abroad. Unless The Big Bang Theory spin-off decides to totally deviate from the established canon, it's best for it to limit the creation of plot inconsistencies moving forward. Secondly, it's difficult to imagine Sheldon coming back home full-time after his trip from Germany. By 14, he would have already finished college and started his post-graduate studies at Caltech, according to The Big Bang Theory. This means that it's likely that the boy genius will move to Pasadena, California, not long after he finishes his academic stint in Europe.
It's uncertain why, but the Young Sheldon season 6 finale is unnecessarily destroying The Big Bang Theory canon. There's no justified reason for it to fast-track its storytelling, considering that it still has compelling narratives that it can focus on instead of introducing Sheldon's Germany trip. However, it could be part of CBS' elaborate ruse to escape George's cheating scandal, fully knowing that it could drastically change the show. At this point, Young Sheldon opting not to show the incident on-screen may be best for the series. This way, it can preserve its light and fun tone, especially if CBS is planning to continue the series beyond season 7.
Young Sheldon season 6 airs Thursdays on CBS.
