Julia Roberts has suggested that her hit film Pretty Woman would not get made today – and that she nearly turned down Notting Hill.
The 1990 film is about a prostitute who falls in love with a client, and plays upon sexual power dynamics.
But the Oscar-winning actress has suggested that today's political and cultural climate would mean that the story would not get greenlit.
'I don't really think you could make that movie now, right?' she said.
'So many things you could poke a hole in, but I don't think it takes away from people being able to enjoy it.'
Eight actresses turned the role down before an unknown Julia was offered the role of Vivian Ward.
She starred opposite Richaerd Gere as Edward Lewis, a wealthy businessman who pays Vivian to be his escort for several business and social functions.
Over the course of their week together, their relationship develops and they fall for each other.
However, the film was originally intended to be a cautionary tale about class and sex work before it was reconceived as a romantic comedy.
Speaking to the Guardian, she also revealed that she 'did not want to do' Notting Hill, which was another huge romantic comedy hit.
'The pitch of it sounds awful, right? Do you want to come and play the world's biggest movie star and then fall in love with the bookshop owner? No!'
However she claimed that she now sees the film as a 'little jewel of a movie'.
