Ladies, unite! Moms come in all shapes and sizes — and 2016's Mother's Day captured all the highs and lows that are associated with parenthood.

The movie focuses on stories of several different moms, including divorcee Sandy ( Jennifer Aniston), who finds herself splitting time with her ex's new wife, Tina ( Shay Mitchell), on the special holiday. Sisters Jesse ( Kate Hudson) and Gabi ( Sarah Chalke), for their part, don't speak with their mother because of her controversial take on their respective relationships.

Miranda ( Julia Roberts), meanwhile, gave up her daughter, Kristin ( Britt Robertson), for adoption. Their lack of a relationship has continued to influence the type of mother Kristin wants to be — and whether she wants to get married to her baby daddy.

Hollywood great Gary Marshall found success directing 2010's Valentine's Day and 2011's New Year's Eve, but Mother's Day took his holiday films to the next level. Not only did he direct the mom-focused movie, but he also produced it and wrote the script.

Mother's Day was Marshall's final project before his death in July 2016 at age 81. While the cast didn't know it would be his last movie, all of them pointed to the legendary filmmaker's clout as the reason the signed on.

"It was so much fun. Fantastic cast," Hudson said during an April 2016 appearance on the Today show. "It's Gary! Nobody says no to Gary Marshall."

Aniston agreed during a sit-down with Front Row Features that same month. "Garry Marshall was the reason I think most of us said 'yes' to this movie," she explained at the time. "Because since I was a kid [we all watched Marshall's work on] Happy Days or The Odd Couple or Laverne & Shirley."

The Morning Show actress continued: "So kind of without even reading a script I think we said, 'Yep.' He really does a beautiful job on touching on all of the different scenarios of what the family unit looks like today and I think it's quite lovely."

The Friends: The Reunion star also gushed over her castmates during an on-set interview published in April 2016. She called  Timothy Olyphant, who played her onscreen ex-husband, Henry, a "gentlemen" who had "charisma and wonderful energy."

Aniston's character, Sandy, eventually gets her own love story with Bradley, played by  Jason Sudeikis, whom she's worked with on multiple occasions. "We should just continue off into the sunset at the rate we've been doing movies together," the actress joked while describing her chemistry with Sudeikis. "Which makes it quite comfortable and fun and familiar in all the best ways."

The Horrible Bosses star later sang Roberts' praises while at the film's Los Angeles premiere in April 2016.

"It was incredible. It was not enough. We only had a day together," Aniston told Access Hollywood at the time. "She's such a beautiful, professional, funny, wonderful human. It was everything you would expect and a little bit more."

Roberts returned the favor, telling the outlet that Aniston is "an incredible person. Her career is outstanding. She knows what she's doing."

Jennifer Aniston

The California native played divorced mom Sandy, who shares two sons with ex-husband Henry. Aniston then starred in Office Christmas Party, The Yellow Birds, Dumplin', Murder Mystery and Murder Mystery 2. She's been playing Alex Levy on The Morning Show since 2019. The Cake star is also an executive producer on the Apple TV+ series.

The Friends alum was married to  Brad Pitt from 2000 to 2005. She and  Justin Theroux tied the knot in 2015 after getting engaged in 2012. The pair called it quits in February 2018.

Kate Hudson

Hudson portrayed Jesse, who has issues with her own mom, whom she thinks is racist. That same year, she voiced Mei Mei in King Fu Panda 3 and starred in Deepwater Horizon. The California native has since appeared in Marshall, Music, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and she portrayed Michah Keith on Truth Be Told in 2021. The Oscar nominee founded Fabletics in 2013 and King St. Vodka in 2019. She cohosts the "Sibling Revelry" podcast with her brother  Oliver Hudson.

The How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days actress shares eldest son Ryder with ex-husband  Chris Robinson, whom she split from in 2006. She and then-fiancé  Matthew Bellamy welcomed son Bingham in July 2011 but the pair called it quits in December 2014. Kate got engaged to  Danny Fujikawa in September 2021, with whom she shares daughter Rani.

Julia Roberts

Roberts played TV personality and author Miranda Collins. The Oscar winner went on to star in Wonder, Ben Is Back and Ticket to Paradise. The Georgia native portrayed Heidi Bergman on Homecoming in 2018 and Martha Mitchell on Gaslit in 2022.

The Pretty Woman star married  Daniel Moder in 2002. The couple share twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, born in 2015, and son Henry, born in 2007.

Jason Sudeikis

Sudeikis portrayed widower Bradley, who is raising two daughters alone. The Virginia native then appeared in Colossal, Downsizing, Booksmart, The Angry Birds Movie 2 and South of Heaven. The Emmy winner has also starred on The Last Man on Earth and Ted Lasso. He developed the Apple TV+ series in 2020 and has portrayed the titular character, Ted Lasso, throughout the series.

The Saturday Night Live alum split from  Olivia Wilde in November 2020 after a seven-year engagement and nine years together. The exes share son Otis and daughter Daisy. Sudeikis dated  Keeley Hazell for nearly one year before they split in May 2022.

Timothy Olyphant

The Hawaii native portrayed Sandy's ex-husband, Henry, who recently wed Tina. Olyphant then appeared in Snowden, Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood, The Starling and Amsterdam. His biggest TV roles include playing Joel Hammond on Santa Clarita Diet, Dick "Deafy" Wickware on Fargo and Rod Reyes on Daisy Jones & The Six.

The Justified alum, who was an executive producer on the FX project, has been married to  Alexis Knief since 1991. The couple share three children: daughters Grace and Vivian and son Henry.

Shay Mitchell

The Canadian actress played Henry's new wife, Tina, and the stepmother to Sandy's two sons. Mitchell filmed Mother's Day amid her time on Pretty Little Liars, which ended in 2017. She has since starred on You, The Heiresses, Trese and Dollface. In 2023, the actress began voicing Brenda on the animated series Velma. Mitchell launched her travel brand, BÉIS, in 2018 and her Onda Tequila Seltzer cocktails in 2020.

The Cleaning Lady executive producer welcomed daughters Atlas and Rome in 2019 and 2022, respectively, with partner  Matte Babel.

Sarah Chalke

Chalke portrayed Jesse's sister, Gabi, who is at odds with their mother over her sexual preference. The Canadian actress appeared on season 10 of Roseanne as Andrea, she then starred on Friends From College and Speechless. She voiced characters on Paradise PD and Rick and Morty before portraying Kate Mularkey on Firefly Lane from 2021 to 2023.

The former Scrubs star shares children Charlie and Frances with longtime partner  Jamie Afifi, whom she's been dating since 2003.

Britt Robertson

Robertson played Kristin, Miranda's birth daughter, who is longing for a mother-daughter relationship after having her own child. The North Carolina native then appeared in The Space Between Us, I Still Believe, A Mouthful of Air and About Fate. Her TV credits include Girlboss, For the People, Big Skye and The Rookie. Robertson has been playing Laura Stensen on The Rookie: Feds since 2022.

The Secret Circle alum wed  Paul Floyd in April 2023.
