As countless Pinterest boards will attest, Julia Roberts has always given good suit. Back in 1990, the Steel Magnolias heroine turned up at the Golden Globes to collect her statuette for Best Supporting Actress in Giorgio Armani men's tailoring of XXL proportions, accessorised with red curls, a floral tie and workman's boots. The short suit chimed perfectly with the notes that De Sarno hit in his first collection for the storied Italian house, with Kering announcing he would be taking over from Alessandro Michele back in January. His presentation at Gucci’s Milanese headquarters stripped away the eccentricity and ornamentation of his predecessor, shifting the focus onto “materials, shape and silhouette”, instead. “I want to set a new aesthetic for Gucci,” De Sarno . “It’s the beginning of something new.” Only time will tell whether he can recreate the success of Michele’s tenure – or, indeed, Tom Ford’s, with the latter’s stint as creative director heavily influencing De Sarno’s offering on Friday. #NewGucci already has one diehard fan, though. “GORGEOUS!” Roberts declared on Instagram post-show.
