Looks like Penny saved the day!
There's no doubt that is one of the most popular shows ever. The fandom of the show is huge, and even though the last season ended in 2019, the details of its production are still being discussed a lot.
The show had a long run of 12 seasons and every character of the show became a fan favorite. But as it was recently revealed, the first version of the pilot of the series didn't get enough credit and the creators even thought of scrapping it.
The thing is, the initial pilot for the series actually contained two other characters that were inevitably cut out. Katie played by Amanda Walsh was supposed to be the main female character, and there was one more female role, Gilda, played by Iris Bahr.
But CBS didn't like it as much as they wanted, so something had to be done to change that and keep the project going. So the show's creator Chuck Lorre invited Kaley Couco to play the new role of Penny, and that's when the magic happened. And soon she will become the favorite character among all.
"The character was great, I like how she developed because she was very one dimensional in the first season – just basically a beautiful bimbo. I like how her character took traits from her new friends as the show developed," Redditor pedro_mcdodge said.
Looks like the introduction of the new character and her kind and warm personality both on and off screen is indeed what made the show work. The Katie character was cold and brutal, but the writers made Penny actually be nice to the nerd group at the core of the show, and it seems like that was the most important thing to do for the sake of the show's future success.
The test audience loved the pilot and it was then that The Big Bang Theory was officially greenlit.
