In the celebrity world, having a long-lasting marriage is a record to be proud of. Julia Roberts has been happily married to her husband Danny Moder since 2002 and shares three wonderful children with him. The actress often posts about her life and husband on social media, making fans swoon over their marital bliss.
However, the Pretty Woman star has had her share of relationships, a failed marriage, and a broken engagement. In the true fashion of a Hollywood diva, the actress once infamously ran away from her marriage just days before.
Among the many movies of Julia Roberts', The Runaway Bride is the most iconic one. Why one might ask. The reason being that the 'runaway bride' situation actually took place way before in Roberts' life. It was the year 1991 and the actress was all set to marry her partner of less than a year Kiefer Sutherland.
The two met each other on the set of Flatliners and fell in love. After a brief romance, they planned to get married. However, just days into their relationship, Sutherland was rumored to have cheated on Roberts with a stripper. What was considered the end of their romance led to the Notting Hill actress spotting a huge ring, sending the media into havoc.
And soon enough the date was set, preparations done, and Julia Roberts had a custom wedding dress worth $8,000 made for her special day. while everyone was excited and anticipating to witness the wedding, Roberts suddenly canceled it all just two days before.
It was later revealed that Sutherland wasn't even informed of his webbing being canceled, and got to know the devastating news from a mutual friend. The devastation only amplified when it was Roberts was spotted with her ex-fiance's best friend Jason Patric on the day she was supposed to walk down the aisle with Kiefer Sutherland.
While most would consider it sabotage, the Lost Boys star has made his peace with when Julia Roberts broke his heart and 'ran away' with his best friend. He now seems to understand why the actress took such a drastic yet devastating decision and even has reconnected with his best friend Jason Patric. In an interview, Sutherland stated,
"I think she had courage. It wasn't what she wanted to do in the end. And I think it took a lot of courage, in amongst all of that other stuff, to be able to say, 'I can't do this.'"
Adding one he mentioned how they were very much in love during their brief romance,
"We were both young, and we were both very much in love, we had decided that we wanted to get married, but then this other thing kind of took over. She was arguably the most famous woman in the world, and this wedding that was supposed to be something between the two of us, became something so big."
Letting bygones be bygones, both Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland are in happy relationships with their respective partners.
