Jim Parsons discusses his initial doubts about The Big Bang Theory. Playing Sheldon Cooper in the hit sitcom, Parsons was on the show from beginning to end, which spans 15 seasons. It's difficult to imagine The Big Bang Theory failing after all this time, but Parsons says he wasn't fully confident about the project at the start.
Speaking with Hollywood Outbreak, Parsons opens up about his initial thoughts about The Big Bang Theory. While he was immediately connected to its story, he admits that he wasn't confident that the sitcom would stay on the air for as long as it did. Read his full quote below:
I didn't know it would stay in the air… but I did connect with it in a way that was pretty specific. I will say that. It doesn't happen, as an actor, I don't feel things like that happen that often. A lot of roles that you're like: 'I could do this, and it's fine, and it's good even.' But there was something from the moment I read this one. But as far as carrying on into something that gone on this long, no, I had no idea.
In May 2019, the nerd-centric sitcom ended its 12-year run.
The jampacked The Big Bang Theory finale was heavily focused on Parsons' Sheldon, who had clearly become the show's true lead at that point. However, had the actor not decided to leave the series, CBS was interested in renewing it again for a couple of more seasons, which made sense given how popular it was then. Unfortunately, a series of life events made Parsons realize it was time for him to exit the show. When Parsons made his decision, he didn't think it would mark the end of The Big Bang Theory. Despite some of his cast mates feeling blindsided by his announcement, everybody realized that the show could not go on without Sheldon, considering how integral he was to its success.
Years removed from The Big Bang Theory, almost every single main cast member from the show has gone on to do other projects. Despite the series' popularity when it ended, Parsons stands by his decision to leave when he did. Now learning about his initial doubts about the project and not having any expectations from it makes it easier to understand why it seemed like making the decision to leave The Big Bang Theory was uncomplicated for him.
